Restaurants to go to when you’re broke

Eating out for less than ten bucks

Even poor students want to have a nice evening out every once in a while. Not in the mood for cheap pizza or pasta? There are still several gastropubs in Groningen where you can get a main course for less than 10 euro. UKrant made you a list.

Lambik

For years, Lambik has been the place to go for students who wanted to go out to dinner but didn’t have a lot to spend. No need to anguish over a menu, since it is limited to only three dishes a day: one with fish, one with meat, and a vegetarian one. Past dishes include a hearty vegetable pie, stew, or shish kebab, with a side salad and a choice between potatoes and rice. The portions are generous, but if you have any room left over at the end, they also serve dessert.

Location: Grote Kruisstraat 73
Price: 9,75 euros

Feel Good

If you’ve overdone it on pizza and french fries, Feel Good serves a vegetarian daily special during the week to cheer your body up, full of vegetables, legumes, grains, and more healthy stuff. Last week, they served pumpkin risotto with goat’s cheese, a Thai green curry, and a frittata with zucchini, spinach, feta, and a quinoa salad. You have to be on time though, because dinner is served between 5 and 7 pm.

Location: Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 29
Price: 8,50 euros or a deal for ten meals for 75 euros

Sportsbar Groningen

If the new food court at the Kapteynborg is too expensive for you, you can pay the recently renovated Sportsbar at the ACLO Sports Centre a visit. Almost all their meals cost less than ten euros. In addition to the ever-changing daily special, the price of which was recently lowered from 7 euros to 5.50, you can also order things like lasagne, fish, chicken satay, shrimp or pork noodles, and a (vegetarian) hamburger.

Location: Blauwborgje 16
Price: Daily special: 5.50 euros, other dishes a maximum of 12.50

De Slingerij

Located in the former inn belonging to Ome Loeks, the guy posing with his horse in front of the central station, gastropub De Slingerij serves mainly ‘old-fashioned’ dishes, including horse meat. The daily specials reflect this as well: today, you can choose between cheese fondue and roast pork neck. De Slingerij always has one daily special with meat and one vegetarian option. They’re served with vegetables, a side salad, and french fries.

Location: Aweg 12
Price: 9,50 euros

De Stadstuin

Gastropub De Stadstuin has two locations: one at the Hereweg and one near the Noorderplantsoen. This means there’s always one nearby, and you can choose from two daily specials which you can find on their website, such as chicken thigh shish kebab with sweet-and-sour tomato sauce, or a schnitzel with creamy mushroom sauce. There’s no menu to choose from, so if they’re serving meat and you’re a vegetarian, you’re out of luck.

Location: Hereweg 42 and Koninginnelaan 45
Price: 9,95 euros
