Rainbow day

Flying the flag

1-1 intro
On Wednesday, rainbow flags fluttered at student associations across the city, from the Gyas rowing association at the Hoornsediep to the Knickerbockers football club at Zernike.
Text and photography by Traci White

The initiative, coordinated by LGBTQ plus student association Ganymedes and the municipal government party Student & Stad, was in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. ‘A significant portion of the student population is unsure whether it is socially acceptable to reveal their sexual orientation’, according to the party. ‘Sexual diversity remains an unspoken theme’ in student associations.

Two of the three members of the RUG’s Board of Directors – Elmer Sterken and Jan de Jeu – held a rainbow flag in front of the Academy Building to kick off the day. Student associations with their own space or building – Vindicat, Albertus, Dizkartes, SIB, Cleopatra, Unitas, Gyas and Knickerbockers – hoisted the rainbow flag on their flag poles or hung it from the windows of their offices. Student political parties and smaller student and study associations without a headquarters were provided with mini rainbow flag for the photo ops throughout the day.
