From now on, people will be able to park their bikes at the Grote Markt when they go out, the municipality of Groningen has decided.
There have been earlier experiments with bicycle parking areas on the square in front of the city hall building, but the municipality have decided to allow people to park their bikes every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.
The parking areas will ensure that other places in town will not suffer from cluttering parked bicycles, according to the municipality.
The parking areas are accessible between eight p.m. and six a.m.
According to the municipality, the areas will not only decrease bicycle cluttering elsewhere, they will also make the city more accessible for the police, ambulances, and fire brigade.
